How My Research Will Inform My Planning
By researching my real media artefacts I can see now what is commonly found in pop music videos and how pop artists have been successful in making a pop music video. By looking into Nicki Minaj's music video for 'Superbass' I can see that if the song is upbeat and fun, bright colours work really well and that there should be more short takes than long takes. However, looking at Adele's video for 'Make you feel my love' I've found that longer takes and dim lighting work a lot better for that piece of music because of the pace. So I've learnt that a lot depends on the pace of the song so thats something that will help me plan and storyboard.
Also, looking at the focus group that I got together, I can see what the public seems to think works well for a video and how that makes it a successful video. So overall, I think my research has proved to be very helpful for when I come to do my planning.
Product Placement
Another way to promote the video would be to use music channels to show it. Popular channels such as MTV Hits and StarzTV are quite popular for pop music videos as I can see through my questionnaire results so I would consider channels such as these. I would also put the video up on the popstar's website because fans of the star would visit the site quite reguarly. This would generate more awareness of the video and would again promote it successfully.
I would also sell the music videos on iTunes for roughly £1.99 because, after researching it on iTunes, the majority of music videos are aroudn that price. This would create profit and fans would be likely to buy if they would like to be able to watch away from internet connection.
Real Media Artefact (MIKA Ad)
This is an advertisement for MIKA’s album “The Boy Who Knew Too Much.”The advertisement uses the illustrations taken from the front cover of the album so that the reader can associate these patterns with the artist and his new album. As this advertisement doesn’t actually show an image of the album itself, the reader would have to know what sort of thing to look out for if they were looking for it in the store so the reader would associate these illustrations with the album and would look for this sort of front cover in the store.
The artist’s name is in the biggest font on the page so it would grab the readers’ attention as they turned the page and if the person reading it is a fan of the artist then they are likely to read the whole page and find out about the album.
There is also an image of MIKA next to his name to show who the artist is and so that people who may not be too sure of who he is will then associate this font of text and this sort of illustration with the artist and this album from now on.
On the bottom left of the page there is the date of when this album comes out which is quite clearly important when advertising a new album because people who are interested in buying it will want to know when they can buy it. It also says “the new album” which could be something to consider including because it makes it seem more exciting if something is new. This is then followed by what songs are included; they’ve mentioned songs that had previously been released. This would interest the reader because if they enjoyed these songs already then it is going to make them curious as to what other songs are on the album and make them want to buy the album.
Real Media Artefact (MIKA Digipak)
The front cover is made up of many illustrations that represent the 'mind of MIKA' and makes the CD seem almost childlike and less serious as opposed to just having an image of mika on the front cover. The colours of these illustrations are also very eye catching and so, for the purpose of grabbing the attention of someone, this would work well because the colours are very bright and stand out. The illustrations then carry out onto the back page where the planets and stras are also drawn and even the CD has an illustration on it, so this links the whole package together. The illustrations of the universe could represent how the album is 'out of this world' or it could relate to the name of the album, along with the cluster of images because "The Boy Who Knew Too Much" could suggest that he knows of all these things that have been shown on the front cover. The name of the artist, MIKA, is in capital letters in very large font on the front cover so, again, this grabs the attention of the reader. The choice of white for the colour of the font makes it stand out against the colourful background so that it is clear to see who's album this is.
On the back page there is a list of songs for the first CD and a list of songs for the second CD and the font used here is in yellow. This is most likely because, although white would stand out against the background slightly better, if the font were white it would blend in a little too much with the bright white stars illustrated on the back page. So the yellow font makes it stand out against the background and the stars.
There is also a small image of MIKA on the forn cover next to his name so that people can associate this sort of font and illustration with him as an artist. There is a barcode on the back which will be on every digipak and next to that is a paragraph of information about the company and record label etc.
Real Media Artefact (Katy Perry Digipak)
This is a Digipak for Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream'.To begin with, there are two main images of Katy Perry on this digipak; they are both very large photos and take up the whole of the page on the digipak. This will promote the artist because she is seen as mostly naked in both images so it will provoke interest in that sense. Also it comes with a free poster of Katy Perry in another revealing outfit linking in with her 'teenage dream' theme of the album. This free poster will encourage people to buy the digipak because it will seem like the buyer is getting more for their money and this will promote the artist well because more people will be buying the digipak and listening to her music. The images of her are made to look as though she is on a cloud. This links in well with her 'teenage dream' theme because it is a surreal thing to be lying in the clouds and we always associate dreams with clouds such as the dream clouds cartoons use to suggest someone is dreaming or thinking.
The two disks that come with the digipak both have different images of them, but both have been made to look like a sweet or a lollipop. This links in with one of Katy Perry's number 1 hit "California Gurls" where, in the video, she is in a land of sweets-similar to a 'Charlie And The Choclate Factory' land, but with sweets. The people who have bought this digipak will relate these images to the video and so even the images on the disks link in with tracks.
There is a theme of pink and red which are colours often associated with sweets-red for lollipops and pink for candyfloss. This would, again, link in with her track "California Gurls" because in the video she is in a land full of sweets.
There is a barcode on the backpage which will appear on any digipak so this is necessary to have when producing ours. Also, there is the information in small print about the company and record label etc, which I will have to look into more detail about later on.
Real Media Artefact (Gwen Stefani Ad)
This advertisment is for Gwen Stefani's album- "Love.Angel.Music.Baby."The image in the background of this advertisement is a close up of the image on the album cover-a large image of Gwen Stefani. This grabs the attention of the reader straight away because the artist takes up the whole page. This is then followed by the artist’s name in large letters in a gold colour across the width of the page. This also grabs the attention of the reader because if the reader is aware of who Gwen Stefani is then the page is likely to grab and keep their attention.
There is also an image of the album at the bottom of the page and this promotes the album well because if the reader is reading the page they will see the image of the album and they will know what to look out for if they want to go and buy it. On the cover of the album she is holding lots of expensive, royal objects and so this also links in with the gold colour used for the text on the advertisement. The colours on the advertisement link in well with the colours on the album cover.
Alongside the image of the album it also mentions a couple songs that have already been released that are on the album. This is promotes the album well because if someone reading that has heard one of those songs and likes them it is most likely going to interest them as to what other songs are on the album that they might like.
Real Media Artefact (Taylor Swift-You Belong With Me) MUSIC VIDEO
The visuals of this video link in with the lyrics of the song because the song is describing how Taylor feels about this guy, that she has always been there for him and that they should be together and the video is simply acting this out. Throughout the music video there is a theme of comedy as her audience is likely to be relatively young, e.g. the scene where Taylor is in her bedroom dancing around and singing to her own song into a hairbrush. This can be seen as quite comical because she is lip syncing to the song but in a way that is seen almost as a guilty pleasure-singing out loud to yourself. She then goes on to dress up as the popular girlfriend of the male character, as well as acting out the innocent best friend of the male character. When Taylor has her natural blonde curls she is seen as the innocent ‘geek’ that everyone is rooting for in the music video, but when she wears a brunette, straight wig she is seen as the ‘bitchy’ girlfriend that none of the audience like because she is stopping Taylor and the male character from being together.
Costume plays a big part on this music video because Taylor is not only acting out two characters, but both of the characters that she is portraying are complete stereotypes. Firstly, the geeky character-for this role Taylor is seen wearing overly large glasses and quite plain, simple clothes such as jeans and a jumper in the bench seen. Her hair also tends to be quite messy when she is playing the geek role. This contrasts however with the cheerleader girlfriend role that she also portrays. This role, again, is vey stereotypical because of the costume. This character is seen as very glamorous because she has the straight, brunette hair that is very neat and tidy, she also wears lip gloss and obvious amounts of makeup in most scenes and is seen wearing quite revealing outfits such as her prom outfit in the last scene. Alongside this, there is also the ‘ugly duckling’ moment where the geeky character takes off her glasses and goes to the prom looking almost princess-like. The costume here is very important because she has changed from this geeky character to someone who everyone can’t take their eyes off of. Her hair in this prom this scene is very tame; she still has the blonde curls that the singer is well known for but her hair is no longer frizzy or ‘out of control’. Also, the dress that her character is wearing is white which could be seen as representing ‘good’ because white has many positive connotations such as pure and heavenly and in contrast, the evil character in this music video (the cheerleader girlfriend) is wearing red which has many negative connotations, so the audience will associate the girlfriend with negative connotations and the geeky character with positive connotations.
Considering the filming and editing of this music video, there are many point of view shots at the beginning of the video and further on in the video in the scene where a conversation on notepads is taking place between the male character and the ‘geek’ character through the window. These point of view shots make the audience feel as though they are involved and it is more likely to make them rot for the geeky character because they will feel more connected with this character, especially since Taylor Swift’s audience are younger teens. During the chorus there is also quite a few short takes which is mostly done to match the tempo of the music because it speeds up throughout the chorus. Towards the end however, there are more longer takes because, not only is it to match the pace of the music, but it almost acts a slow motion device so that everyone can take in how different she looks and it shows how everyone’s eyes are on her.
I think the music video promotes the song well because, considering her target audience is young teens, the storyline almost acts as a fantasy towards her audience-that the girl gets the guy in the end. She could maybe even have fans who can relate to the storyline and so would probably be more likely to listen to the song and want to buy it because it relates to their life at that point in time.
Real Media Artefact (Adele-Make You Feel My Love) MUSIC VIDEO
This video contrasts with the stereotypical pop music video for many reasons. The Lighting, throughout the video, is very dark and creates a very depressed feeling which relates to the lyrics in the song. The video is set at night so the natural light is dark as it is but then also the outside of the building is dark and even the lighting within the apartment is quite dark. This all adds to the mood of the video because the producers would have wanted the viewers to feel down when watching this video so that they could relate to how Adele is feeling throughout the video.
As the majority of the video is set in the same apartment at the same time, the costume is the same throughout. Adele has messed up hair and her makeup is quite smudged which is quite effective because it suggests that she couldn’t sleep and had maybe given up on caring because she didn’t bother taking her makeup off.
Considering the editing, the whole music video consists of quite long takes. This matches the pace of the track because it is very slow so the long takes work well with this pace. Also, the slow takes mirror the mood of the music video; if there were many fast takes it would represent that a lot is happening in the scene where as this music video just shows Adele walking around her apartment, there is not much going on and so the slow takes work well with this.
This video also contains diagetic sounds which are not common in music videos e.g. you can hear when Adele texts and places the phone back down on the side and you can hear her ruffling her clothes. This makes the scene seem more realistic-as though the viewer is in the room with her because you can hear everything that is going on, such as the TV.
In terms of Mise-En-Scene, there are clothes all over the place in her apartment; this suggests that she doesn’t feel the need to care at the moment-that she sees it like there’s no point in making the effort. Also, at some point Adele goes to the fridge and she grabs a big cosy cardigan and both of these can be related to an upsetting point in a relationship because it is quite stereotypical of girls to cosy up and eat when something goes wrong in a relationship.
There are also many close-ups of Adele's face which show that her makeup is slightly smudged and her hair is messed up. This makes Adele seem more relatable because that is what you would look like if you were in her situation and normally popstars don't really like people seeing them at their worst so this makes Adele seem more down to earth. this would promote her well because people will like her because she seems so relatable.
Real Media Artefact (Nicki Minaj-Superbass) MUSC VIDEO
The Mise-En-Scene in the video is very over-the-top e.g. to begin with there are large ice sculptures in the background, followed by a very expensive, bright pink sports car, and bright pink airplane…even Nicki Minaj’s eye lashes are extended. This has been done to match the personality of the artist, she is well known for being over-the-top and so this makes her music videos distinguishable from the other artists that are about. There is also many half naked men in the video which could attract a female audience but could also show how she is only interested in one man because she doesn’t really pay attention to the other men, she is always only focused on the same guy. These visuals match the lyrics because she is singing about how he’s ‘got her heartbeat running away’-suggesting he has her heart.
Throughout the video there are many bright colours used to make the video stand out and seem more fun and upbeat. It seems as though each new scene has a new colour scheme e.g. the first scene is very pink, the next scene there is a mix of pink and green and then in the last scene, even though the lighting is very dark, they are wearing bright glow-in-the-dark clothes. Nicki even coordinates her wigs with the colour of each scene.
There are many mid shots of the singer throughout the video which shows her revealing outfits. This would promote her, especially to a male audience, because they would associate her with having curves and would probably watch the video more often because of this. There is also a voyeuristic shot where the artist pours a drink over herself and the camera tilts to follow the drink, which again could attract more of a male audience.
At the beginning of the music video the lighting is very bright and makes the video feel very fun and lively because it matches the mood of the music. However towards the end the lighting is very dark and contrasts with the bright outfits. This puts the attention on the girls in the bright outfits and again promotes the artist because the audience’s attention would be on Nicki Minaj as she is wearing something slightly different.
Focus Group
1. Do The Visuals Match The Pace Of The Music?
2. Do You Think Costume and Setting Is Appropriate To The Song?
3. Did You Like The Video and Why? Or Why Not?
4. Is The Music Video a Good Promotional Device For The Singer?
5. What Would You Rate The Video Out Of 10
RESULTS:
1. All 3 people thought that the visuals work well with the music, one person wrote down "the dancing is in time with the music and is upbeat and fast" and the other two said that they thought it was all quite fast paced and kept in time with the beat. So georgia and I should consider how to edit the takes to be in time with thebeat as well as the lyrics.
2. Again, all 3 of them put the same sort of answers. They all thought that the costumes and settings were appropriate because it was based in India and the band are wearing outfits that are slightly adjusted to become a combination of both cultures-so the outfits are quite revealing and tight fitting which would be accepted in our culture along with a little bit of Indian culture.
3. 2 of the the 3 people I asked said they did like it because 'its very fun and upbeat' and because 'its a really fun video and the song is very uplifting." However the third person said that they didnt like it because it was 'too cheesy' and when I asked him to specify he said "its just too cheesy when everyone is dancing together and everyone is all happy and smiling-that just wouldn't happen" so I need to take into account how far down the line is 'too cheesy' and to try and prevent our music video form being 'too cheesy'.
4. All 3 people said that they thought the music video was a good promotional device. The two who said that they liked the video said (along the same lines as each other) that it was a very popular song and video was very fun so lots of people liked it and couldn't wait to buy it. The male who said he didn't like the videdo said that although he didn't like it, he still think that for its main audience of pop lovers that the video was a good promotional device.
5. One person rated it a 9/10, another rated it a 7/10 and the last person rated it an 8.5/10

Ancillary Tasks Questionnaire Results
What would You Expect To See On An Advertisement In a Magazine That Is Advertising a Pop Singer’s New Album?

The most popular options were the 'Release Date of the Album' and 'Images of the Album' so I think these two options Georgia and I should definitely include those two. The other options all had pretty similar results so I think that we could just mess around with what else to include in the advertisement and see what looks best and what would help sell the album more.
What Colours Would Expect To Find on an Advertisement for a Pop/hiphop Album? You Can Circle More Than One.

Pink was most popular, which was quite expected because pop seems to be seen as quite a fun, happy genre of music and so this was correspond with the bright colour of pink. black and silver are the next most popular colour which I could combine for the advertisement.
Would You Rather See More Text or More Images?

The majority of people want to see more images than text. This would work well because more images would grab the readers' attention to the page and keep them interested where as too much text would maybe lose the attention of the readers' attention.

For this question most people put gossip magazines, someone also added next to the question "at the end with the reviews." For a pop/hiphop album I think this is more appropriate because in most music magazines you tend to find advertisments for alternative/indie albums and the pop magazines tend to be for a younger audience and therefore tend not to advertise new albums often.
Do You Think Advertising a Pop Star's New Album Is a Good Way of Promoting The Album and The Singer?
Everyone that answered this questionnaire said that Yes they do think advertising a new album is a good way of promoting the album. This shows that advertising the album in magazines will be beneficial because everyone who was questioned has said that they think its a good way of promoting the album.
Why?
The answers for this question were all very similar. Most people said that it's good because people reading the magazines are likely to notice it and it will make them aware of when the album is on sale, if they didn't already know.
DIGIPAK
What Would You Expect To See Inside a Digipak?

All 4 options were similarly popular but all 10 people said they'd expect to see images of the popstar in the digipak. Then both 'Lyrics In The Booklet' and 'A Message From The Popstar' followed with 8 so this shows that Georgia and I should consider using these 3 things when producing our digipak.
What Colours Would You Associate Most With a Pop Album? You Can Circle More Than One.

The Majority of people said they would expect to find pink on a pop album. So I think this is definitely a colour we should consider including or maybe even using as a main colour. Black and Purple are the next most popular colours to be found on a op album so I think maybe we could inlcude all 3 or choose a combination of 2 colours etc.

My results show that an even amount of people would like to see between 6 and 10 songs and between 11 and 15 songs. Since the results are so equal, Georgia and I could decide any number of songs between 6 and 15 and this should hopefully please our target market.
What Makes You Buy a CD Over Downloading The Song Illegally or From iTunes?
Music Video Questionnaire Results
From my results I can see that I asked 6 females and 4 males. This could mean that my results may be slightly biased because I asked more females than males, but I don’t think it should affect my results too much. I think this is because I only asked 1 female more than I asked males so I don’t think it should make too much of a difference.
How Old Are You?
The majority of the people I asked were between 16 and 20 years old which means that my results will be biased towards this age group. I did ask my younger cousin and a few older members of my family because I wanted to make sure I had a varied set of results. But, looking at my results form this question and looking at the results from my question about how often they watch music videos, I can see that the 16-20 year olds watch music videos more regularly than the other age groups so I am likely to get more specific and relevant results from this age group because they have a better understanding of the music videos and channels etc.
Do You Watch Music Videos Often?Looking at these results and the results from the previous question, I can see that the 7 people who said that they do watch music videos often are all below the age of 20. This helps me with my target market because I can see that my biggest audience would be people under the age or around the age of 20 years old.
Where Do You Watch These Music Videos? You Can Put More Than One Option.
For the people who had previously said that they don’t watch music videos often I did mention that they could answer where they think they would most likely watch the music videos. The most popular option was the with 8 marks by it. So I would need to consider how I would let people access the music video via the . Television and Gadgets were both equally popular as they both got 4, so this shows that I still need to consider these options, but my main focus should be on the .
Every person that circled ‘The ’ for the previous question said that they found the music videos on the website Youtube. This means that this website is extremely popular for promoting artist’s online and so I would need to look into this further. The most popular place to find music videos on the television was the music channel ‘Starz TV’, followed by ‘The Box’ and ‘MTV’ and the most popular gadget to watch music videos was an and then the iPhone. So I would maybe need to look into selling the music video on iTunes.
The majority of people I surveyed said that they watch pop music videos most often, closely followed by hip-hop. These two genres are quite similar in terms of music video, for example quite often both genres will have a narrative based video to the song. So these genres are definitely genres to consider when choosing a song.
Name a Music Video That You Find Iconic. The answer that came up quite often (4 times) was Michael Jackson's 'Thriller'. I think this answer was common because the video itself was very different from anything at the time, and since. It was almost like a short film and it involved a full story line, a dance number and interesting costumes. However I think it would be quite difficult to create a pop/hip hop music video in that sort of style. But I could maybe take from this that trying something new or different could be very effective. Another popular answer was OK Go's 'Here We Go Again'. Again, I think this was popular because the video involved something different and fun; the whole video was shot in one take and it involved fun dance moves with treadmills. So again, the videos seen as most iconic are the videos that involve something new or different from other music videos.
What is Your Favourite Music Video and Why?I was actually surprised to find that 7 people from my questionnaire said that they didnt have a music video. This could be because there is now so many different genres of music videos and so many about that it may be difficult to choose a particular one. Also, all 3 people who said that they don't watch music videos often said that they didnt have a favourite music video, which makes sense because they probably don't know many. The 3 people who said that they do have a favourite music video chose videos form theyre favourite artist's. One person said "Nicki Minaj-Superbass" because its "very fun and colourful and the song is very catchy." Another person said "Adele-Make You Feel My Love" because it's simple which I personally think could be very effective for a music video so this is definitely something to consider in planning.
Would You Prefer The Music Video To Be Performance Based, Narrative Based or Concept Based?
The majority of people, quite clearly, chose narrative based so this is probably the best option for the music video Georgia and I are going to produce. Also, most pop/hip hop music videos are narrative based so I think this will be best for our music video.
Do You Think a Music Video is a Good Way of Promoting An Artist's New Song/ Album? All ten of the people I surveyed said that they think that a music video is a good way of promoting an artist's new song/album. This shows that institutions benefit from making music videos and that the artist will be successfully promoted after a music video is created for them.
